Summer Computational Design + Fabrication Workshop

简介 Description

“运算化设计和建造坊”是“应用系统变量(VAS)”的第三次课程。基于软件Rhino及其插件Grasshopper, 课程主要侧重学习掌握当今前沿的运算化设计方法。设计方法整合了多种实际方案涉及的逻辑过程,更重要的是,通过引入的几种数字建造方式,可以实体建造最终的设计成果。夏季工作坊根据学员的兴趣和软件能力设置三类课程: (A) 软件班, (B) 设计建造班 (C) 全程班。

Computational Design + Fabrication Workshop is the third installment in the Variations of Applied Systems (VAS) series. It is designated to be an efficient entry to the core of our recent computational design studies and its methodologies will make use of Rhinoceros (Rhino) and its plugin, Grasshopper (GH). The design methodologies to be taught are thoroughly integrated with various design processes in practice, most importantly, in conjunction with their realization through the introduction of several fabrication technologies. There are three courses available in this Summer Workshop, which are organized according to the interest and level of the student: (A) Tutorial Course, (B) Design and Fabrication Course, and (C) Master Course.

本次工作坊同样邀请嘉宾来进行主题讲座, 加快学员的学习进度,同时帮助大家加深对当今前沿设计、相关科技以及革新方法的理解。

This course also features a series of guest speakers who will help accelerate the learning process, while increasing the students’ depth of knowledge in contemporary design and technologies, as well as their derived methodologies.

(A) 软件班Tutorial Course:

(A)软件班主要针对初学者,内容是关于犀牛和Grasshopper软件的基础命令教学。学生可以通过此阶段的学习,了解并掌握二者的基础命令与参数控制原件,并通过实际完成对世界著名建筑项目的建模练习,循序渐进地掌握两个软件从基础到高级的运用能力。

(A) The Tutorial Course features fundamental software tutorials of both Rhino and Grasshopper for beginning learners. The focus is on essential commands and components, as well as modeling of world-renowned architecture projects, leading the students to attain a mastery of modeling with Rhino and GH from basic to advanced use.

在课程的后半段,学生们将习得最为常用的建模和设计知识,包括implict和explict建模方法。在课程的完成时,学生将初步具备利用习得的软件技能来探索生成现代化设计的能力。对B类设计建造班感兴趣的同学,除非已掌握必要的Rhino和GH能力,还是有必要进行A阶段的铺垫性学习。

During the latter phase, students will acquire some of the most useful skills and important knowledge for both implicit and explicit modeling. By the end of this course, students will attain a high assurance when exploring and generating contemporary designs using the skills they have acquired. This course is a prerequisite for (B) Design and Fabrication Course, unless students have a similar level of skills in both the Rhino and GH environments.

(B) 设计建造班Design and Fabrication Course:

时间Time:8月2日-8月19日 Aug 2nd-Aug 19th

阶段3:Python编程(2天);阶段4:系统与原型设计(4天);阶段5:数字化建造知识(2天);阶段6:设计与建造课(5天);阶段7:设计表达与汇报(2天)。

Phase 3: Python Coding in GH (2 days); Phase 4: System and Design Prototyping (4 days); Phase 5: Fabrication (2 days); Phase 6: Design Studio and Fabrication (5 days); Phase 7: Visualization and Portfolio (2 days).

(B):设计建造班适合具备Rhino和GH中等或以上水平的学生。本课程包含了Grasshopper(及其插件)的中高级软件技能与软件的拓展应用,包括基于Python的Grasshopper组件编程与系统原型设计。此外,课程还包括比较基础的但是与参数化相关的数字制造技术(包含实际操作激光切割机与3D打印机并实现个人作品)。建造课程专门请到了经验丰富的美国康奈尔大学教授马丁先生及其所在的非静止建筑设计团队进行讲授。

(B) The Design and Fabrication Course targets students with basic to intermediate skills in Rhino and GH. The course covers intermediate to advanced usage of GH and its applications, through the study of GH coding and systems, followed by its fundamental, but relevant fabrication technologies. Here, the emphasis is placed on Tuning Synesthesia’s core research on the system and its application, as well as vanguard knowledge on architecture fabrications (laser cutting, 3D printing, etc.) directed by the AntiStatics.

B班的亮点内容是设计和建造工作坊以及设计表达的课程。对各位同学来说这是一次非常有效的制作作品集的机会。其中,我们会指导学生如何兼顾作品集的适度复杂性与准确逻辑性。
在此课程中,学生将完成2个阶段的课程学习(5天的设计和建造工作坊和2天的作品集训练)。在结束时,导师们将一一指导学生如何做出引人注目的作品集(其中,被选中的优秀作品集将在谷德网站上发表)。无论你是一个决定出国读研的学生,还是一位想要加入理想设计团队的专业人士,抑或一名正在寻求合作的资深设计师,此阶段的设计课将会成为你们施展拳脚的绝佳机会,通过你的设计才华与创造力,伴随着可行的复杂性与明确的逻辑,缔造出让你满意的个人作品集。

The highlight of this course is the design and fabrication studio and visualization, which provides the most efficient opportunity for students to create a professional portfolio of their own designs with decent complexity and accurate logics. Students will take 2 Phases (5 days of design and fabrication workshop and 2 days of portfolio training) at the end of this section, in which tutors will guide them on making compelling portfolios (among which, selected portfolios will be published on GOOOOD’s website). No matter whether you are a student determined to pursue postgraduate study abroad, a professional looking to join an ideal design office, or a seasoned senior designer working for a corporation, the studio in this phase provides the time to expand your design skills and is a great opportunity to express your creativity and compile a personal portfolio that combines feasible complexity with explicit logic.

The curriculum has been tailored for the advancement of the students’ skills and knowledge of computational design to higher than the intermediate level with corresponding fabrication technologies. The course is indeed perfect for anybody who seeks a fruitful learning experience during the summer.

阶段 Phase 3:Python 编程 Coding

本阶段包含Python句法与面向对象编程(OOP)概念和它们的实际演练。过程中将指导学生编写自己的GH python 组件.

Coding in GH. This phase includes the teaching of concepts on python script and Object Oriented programming and tutorials on their commanding. During the phase students will script their own Grasshopper components in python.

阶段Phase 4:系统与原型设计 System and Design Prototyping

此阶段的重点是系统的研究设计营与设计原型的开放讨论。系统研究平台致力于增强学生对于当今设计与科技的深度理解,使学生能够在小组合作项目中探索并应用新技能。同时将系统运用到独立的设计中去,体会相关参数如何引发设计结果的改变(功能和美学层面)。

系统的定义是“组件构成的整体”,它存在于从自然到文化再到人类社会的不同领域和组织中。

我们的系统研究通过总结这些系统原型, 提取它们的内在属性作为元组件,以实现通过改变参数控制设计结果(系统控制)的目标。从系统中提取的规则与形式,将被抽象转化为不针对场地、可以在实践中反复利用的设计原型 。设计原型作为抽象的系统应用形式,通过具体项目中系统参数的改变又可以进一步转变为设计目标质量的自定义控制量。这些总结出的原型可以应用于任何相关的实践项目中。

The highlights of Phase 4 are a research lab of the system and prototyping with an open-forum for discussion. The goal of this research platform is to increase the depth of students’ knowledge in contemporary design and technologies, whereas it largely allows students to explore and apply their new skills through assigned group projects. By making a combination of some systems into the simplest form of design, a prototype, students and lecturers all together explore how parameters can vary the result from the view of both functional and aesthetic properties.

A system may be defined as a set of components that shape a whole and can be found in various fields of matter and organization ranging from nature to culture and society, among others.

Our system research begins by studying certain system examples and extracting their properties as seeds of ruled components, aiming to achieve their respective design goals in practice through variational design. The rules and patterns extracted from these systems will be used in prototypes, which will be reusable across practices due to the intentional omission of localization and are, thus, designated to be the most abstract form of system application, whereas the system parameter will be utilized and transformed into the customized control of our targeted design quality. The prototypes can be applied to any applicable and practical project.

阶段Phase 5:数字化建造Fabrication

会介绍基本的数字化建造技巧。学生需要课程之前阶段掌握的知识,并学会总结之前学到的一些原型。这个阶段的设计方法强调了基于组件的逻辑和数字化建造技术——本次课程将会教学3D 打印和激光切割。

This phase is designed to be a 2 day introduction of fundamental fabrication skills. Students will be required to incorporate their skill and knowledge gained from the previous phases and learn how to physically realize the prototype ideas they generated in those earlier phases. The methodological emphasis will be on component-based logic and fabrication technologies (such as 3D printing and laser cutting).

阶段Phase 6:设计与建造课Design studio and fabrication

是一个开放讨论的设计课。通过开展小组合作,完成不同尺度的设计任务。学生开始把阶段1-4 学到的新技能和阶段5 掌握的数字化技术转化为设计上的运用。

This phase is designed to be a 6 days studio session with an open-forum for discussion. The focus here will be on group projects of various scales, in which students can start to apply their new skills (Phases 1-5) in conjunction with their realization using fabrication technology (Phase 5). If the total number of students ranges from 30 to 70, the studio will be arranged into 2 groups containing 15 to 35 students each.

阶段Phase 7:设计表达与汇报 Visualization

学生把阶段1-6的作业和作品做成作品集,导师指导学生用Adobe套件排版、画分析图与渲染表达,提高作品表达能力。

Under the guidance of teachers, students will compile all their materials from previous stages to create a quality portfolio using diagrams and rendering visualization within Adobe Suite.

A combination of courses A and B that spans 5 weeks (*please see details of each course above). This course packages all the cornerstones of computational design in a dedicatedly-planned manner for students who are totally new to the topic.

冬木千枝是专业的“设计工程师”,也是系联设计的主要创始人。系联设计是一支由多元背景的设计师与工程师组成的国际合作团队,为多个设计领域如总体城市规划,建筑设计,建筑表皮标准化,景观设计以及网络开发等提供服务。作为运算化设计的专业顾问,团队曾与多个事务所合作项目,且某些作品获得奖项。

千枝的专业技术延伸到科技和创新设计,涉及建筑学、计算机科学、文学、艺术和音乐等多种领域——对运算化的应用是它们的共同点。正是由于专注于独特的跨学科设计促成了系联设计的创立。作为首席设计师,千枝带领她的团队对已有的系统和设计原型在建筑和网络开发的应用进行专项研究;正因如此,千枝在近几年内成功举办了多次讲座和研究营,与此同时,学术和实践的各类项目也在她的领导下成果斐然。

Chie Fuyuki is a professional designeer and the main founder of Tuning Synesthesia (TS/tSynsth)—an international collective of young designers and engineers. The team provides services in master planning, architectural design, building skin standardization, landscape design, and web application and design. As specialized consultants in computational design, the team has collaborated on projects with many global and domestic firms, some of which have been awarded notable recognition.

Chie’s expertise extends to several areas in technology and creative design, including: architecture, computer science, literature, art, and music—all linked with the use of computation as a common denominator. It is this special focus that inspired the founding of Tuning Synesthesia. Now, as principal designer, she directs her team in specialized research of current existing systems and design prototypes for application in architecture and web development; as a result, several lectures and workshops have been successfully organized in recent years, and projects, both practical and academic, have blossomed under her leadership.
