Review Phase 回顾阶段 4: Design Studio

Tuning Synesthesia, in collaboration with the Jiang Ren Ying Guo Design Education Centre, held a 2016 Winter Workshop called the “Parametric Design Workshop” from January 11th to February 4th at Beijing Forestry University.[br]


The second half of Phase 3 and one of the main focuses of our 2016 winter parametric workshop: ‘Variations of Applied Systems’

Phase 3 of our workshop was designed to be a short studio session with an open-forum for discussion. The focus here was on group projects of various scales in which students could start exploring and applying their new skills in depth. We also integrated several systems into a singular set of design rules and learned how such settings can generate variations in design, both functionally and aesthetically. In case of the limited time, we selectively covered the advanced parametric design topics.

We narrowed the students down into smaller sets that would be awarded the Golden (4 students + 2 teams), Silver (5 students), and Bronze (5 students) prizes. The scholarship was given to those who won the Golden prize. [br]我们评出了金奖(4位同学及两个团队),银奖(5位),铜奖(5位),奖金只发给金奖。

Fun Strategy in City – Pan Zihao 潘梓浩 & Team

Review from Critics

This is one of few team projects that showed the student’s strong understanding of the material based on their choice of components and systems. I was highly impressed that a single component family of generic triangles could result in the creation of so many variations in prototyping. Terrific renderings!

This procedure of simple operations begins to introduce complexity. Everything else stems from how we look at these operations as architectural categories, from circulation to site, as well as the envelope.

I used three parameters in the design: number of sides, number of units, and length of radium. To control the maximum value and minimal value of the radius of the circles, I can use a differently sized circle or code with different numbers of your choosing.[br]



Review from Critics

All essential design processes and elements were beautifully integrated into his design. It showed solid site analysis and a great concept setting, as well as a decent amount of variations. The next step is to see how variations can emerge as a result of pedestrian circulation and communication through your device…!

This project was able to integrate systems at the scale of the building, while establishing connections to infrastructural networks at the urban scale.

Waterscape T-Stage – Zhongyao Yu 虞中尧

I incorporated the principles of capturing wave energy into the master plan of the generators, the angle of the sun in comparison to the site (which would help control the original orientation of its fluctuation), the dynamic wave energy (to form another orientation of dynamic fluctuation), and, finally, the time of a day to control the refraction of light.[br]



Review from Critics

Through a study of the multitude of relationships between water, humans, and the environment, this project explored a practical idea to develop an architectural language.

Reborn – Xiaoxun Yan鄢晓洵

Our aim is that, by adjusting the green space’s size, shape, and location, we can improve the variety of space as well as the accessibility to those green areas.[br]



Review from Critics

Highly algorithmic and based in problem-solving, I just love it. This is one of a few projects generated through proactive use of python scripting in this workshop. I only hope that there were a longer range of time to develop this project further with the student.

Intensive and ambitious in its scope, the project is structured around a systemic approach of urban design.

The changing position of the sunlight over time is the first parameter. The change in temperature caused by the sun is the second parameter. Both affect the overall skin design.[br]
